Project Leader 101: What you need to know
How to update your project details
Love, Your Park
This year we are asking project leaders to include an art-project component to the event. The mission of the project is to answer the question, "How does a park say I Love You?" See above for a downloadable guide to creating your art project.
Project Leader Orientation
Pick up yard signs, flyers, and a few tips to make your It's My Park! Day project great at the Project Leader Orientation, February 9, 6:00-7:45 PM at the Carver Library, 1161 Angelina St. This is your chance to meet other park activists, learn how to use our volunteer recruitment software, get your questions answered, and more.
Making It's My Park! Day Even Greener
It's My Park Day has always been about making parks greener. We will once again be providing 5-gallon water jugs, and encouraging groups to reduce or eliminate bottled water.
Supply Pick-up, March 4
Supplies may be picked up Thursday, March 4, from 3pm to 6:00pm at the REI store at 6th and Lamar. Supplies will be at front of store. Supply pick-up is NOT optional. In addition to the supplies you requested (Ivy Block, water jugs, snacks, etc.) volunteer packets will be given out (including 2010 IMPD tee shirts!) These packets must be distributed to all volunteers. We'll also be distributing community service documentation and liability waiver forms.
Volunteer Recruitment and Registration
All volunteers should register at our web site, even if they have already signed up with you. We will collect tee shirt size requests, age data, and other details. You will have access to volunteer emails through your event center.
Tee shirts are not guaranteed for anyone registering after Wednesday, March 3 at noon. Volunteer sign up on our web site will close on Friday, March 5, at noon.
How to Update and Check On Project Registrations
You can log in to our website and update your project details or see a list of emails of registered volunteers. Here's how:
It's My Park! Day Mini-Grants
APF will be offering small (up to $250) grants to help with It's My Park! Day projects. Preference will be given to projects in parks east of I-35, but any project leader may apply. The goal of these grants is to make projects happen that otherwise would not be possible and to encourage long-term adoption of the park. Contact our office for more information.
What if it rains?
It’s My Park! Day is rain or shine. As park host, use your discretion to decide whether your project should proceed. If there is lightening or a flood warning, put volunteer safety first. Please call our event-day # 366-2405 if you are canceling.
What should we do with the trash we collect?
It is important to arrange trash pick-up in advance. Your first resource is your PARD park supervisor. If they are unable to assist, contact City of Austin Solid Waste Services. Let us know if you have difficulty arranging trash pick-up.
I need additional tools/plants/other supplies. Can APF provide them?
APF has a large stock of tools in our Tool Trailer and may be able to provide the tools you need. Please reserve your tools early! Other options include:
- Applying for an Austin Parks Foundation Mini-Grant
- Borrowing tools through your park supervisor
- Asking volunteers to bring tools
- Soliciting a donation from your local hardware store
What about liability if someone gets injured at our project?
An important part of park host responsibilities is to have each volunteer sign a liability waiver at the beginning of the workday. We will provide the waiver at supply pick up. Feel free to add your group’s name to the organizations indemnified. Be sure to have volunteers write down their emergency contact’s name and number.
