Volunteer Opportunity: Xeriscaping at Parque Zaragoza

Thank you for signing up to give back to Parque Zaragoza! Austin Parks Foundation is so excited to work with you to support the ecological health, resilience, and beauty of our green spaces.

Project Goals: Let’s get Xeriscaping!! Our main task for the day is to transform the green spaces in front of the Zaragoza Recreation Center. We will transform these grass patches from hard-to-manage spaces into low-maintenance, drought-tolerant rock beds. These rock beds will include diverse native plants that will fit right into the recreation center environment. This will be a fun, educational and rewarding experience!

What to Bring:

  • Please bring plenty of drinking water and fluids to stay hydrated throughout the day. Electrolyte beverages and snacks are encouraged!
  • Please wear comfortable, weather-appropriate gear for outdoor activities and uneven terrain.
    • All volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes.
    • We recommend wearing long pants with ankle coverage for protection against irritants, bugs, and other environmental hazards.
    • Sun protection including a broad-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and light-colored, lightweight clothing are recommended, especially for hot weather.
    • Bug Spray is recommended to prevent bug bites.

Where to Meet: Please meet at the front of the recreation center here on Gonzales Street to get started with introductions and our project for the day!

Parking: There is limited parking available at the Recreation Center lot, and also street parking available along Gonzales St., the Baseball field lot at the Zaragoza Pool lot here, and the the HEB on 7th street.

In the event of dangerous inclement weather such as lightning, hail, or strong winds/ rain, APF staff will direct volunteers to vacate the site immediately.

The event is finished.
