Restoring Zilker Park's Train

In operation since 1961, the beloved train at Zilker Park has been out of commission since May 2019.

Like you, we were saddened by the recent closure announcement from the former operator, and we wanted to help. We understand the train has been an important part of Austin’s past, and with your help, we can ensure it’s part of Austin’s future.

For nearly 30 years, Austin Parks Foundation has been a dedicated partner of the Parks and Recreation Department (PARD), working together to preserve and improve our city's public parks. Because of our partnership, and years of proven results, we were contacted to help find an interim solution to restore the Zilker train.

With the city and PARD, we'll bring the train back to Zilker Park. We will work diligently to get the tracks fixed, and we will restore operations as quickly and safely as possible.

Soon, Zilker Park will undergo a master planning process, building a new, long-term vision for the park. Our involvement with the Zilker train will continue until this process is complete and the community has a chance to determine how the train fits into the new master plan.

Restoring the Train at Zilker Park

The beloved train at Zilker Park, which has been in operation since 1961, has been out of commission since May 2019. Recently, the permanent closure of the train was announced by the former operator.

Like you, we were saddened by this news and we wanted to help. We heard you when you said that the train has been an important part of Austin’s past and together, with you, we want to ensure that it’s part of Austin’s future.

For nearly 30 years, Austin Parks Foundation has been a dedicated partner of the Parks and Recreation Department, working together to preserve and improve our city's public parks. Because of our partnership and years of proven results, we were contacted to help find an interim solution to restore the Zilker train.

Thank you to Austin History Center for this great photo!

We are committed to working with the city and PARD to ensure that the train returns to Zilker Park and we will work diligently to get the tracks fixed, ensure a train is purchased and that the operations of the train return as quickly as possible.

Together, we can make this happen.

In the near future, Zilker Park will undergo a master planning process, building a new, long-term vision for the park. Our involvement with the Zilker train will be until this process is complete and it is determined how the train fits into the new master plan.
