Open Volunteer Day: Overton Elementary School Garden

Howdy! Put on your shoes and grab your water bottle as you head out the door to join us for our open volunteer day at Overton Elementary School Garden. Join friends, family and community members as we work together to uplift and revitalize the Overton Garden. We will also be having a community potluck and kid-friendly activities!

Project Goals: Our main task for the day focuses on revitalizing the raised garden beds within the garden and the surrounding area. Revitalization of the garden includes weed pulling of invasive plants, clearing the garden beds of grasses and any other projects or maintenance that the garden space may need. Outside of this, we invite volunteers to join us in our planned community potluck and bring a yummy simple dish to share with others at the open work day event. Lastly, we will also be having a fun rock painting activity for kids and invite everyone to join us at the Colony Park Neighborhood Pool to cool off after a hard day of work!! We look forward to having you join us on August 2nd!

What to Bring:

• Please bring plenty of drinking water and fluids to stay hydrated throughout the day. Electrolyte beverages and snacks encouraged!
• Please wear comfortable, weather-appropriate gear for outdoor activities and uneven terrain.
  • All volunteers are required to wear closed-toed shoes.
  • We recommend wearing long pants with ankle coverage for protection against irritants, bugs, and other environmental hazards.
  • Sun protection including a broad-brimmed hat, sunscreen, and light-colored, lightweight clothing are recommended.
  • Bug Spray is recommended to prevent bug bites.
• Additional clothing if attending pool activity following the volunteer event.
• Food/Dish to share with others at potluck if interested.

Where to Meet: Please meet at the back of Overton Elementary School here to get started with introductions and our project for the day!

Parking: Parking will be available in front and around the school.

In the event of dangerous inclement weather such as lightning, hail, or strong winds/ rain, APF staff will direct volunteers to vacate the site immediately. 

¡Hola! Únase a nuestra jornada de voluntariado en el jardín de la Escuela Primaria Overton. Únase a amigos, familiares y miembros de la comunidad para trabajar juntos y revitalizar el jardín. ¡También tendremos una comida comunitaria y actividades para niños!

Objetivos del proyecto: Nuestra tarea principal del día se centra en revitalizar los bancales elevados del jardín y sus alrededores. La revitalización incluye remover plantas invasoras, limpiar los bancales de pasto y cualquier otro proyecto o mantenimiento que el jardín pueda necesitar. Además, invitamos a los voluntarios a unirse a nuestra comida comunitaria y a traer un plato sencillo y delicioso para compartir en la jornada de trabajo. Por último, también tendremos una divertida actividad de pintura de piedras para niños e invitamos a todos a la piscina vecinal de Colony Park para refrescarse después de un duro día de trabajo. ¡Esperamos contar con su presencia el 2 de agosto!

Qué traer:

Por favor, traigan abundante agua y líquidos para mantenerse hidratados durante todo el día. ¡Se recomiendan bebidas con electrolitos y refrigerios!

Por favor, usen ropa cómoda y adecuada para el clima para actividades al aire libre y terrenos irregulares.

Todos los voluntarios deben usar zapatos cerrados.

Recomendamos usar pantalones largos que cubran los tobillos para protegerse de irritantes, insectos y otros peligros ambientales.

Se recomienda usar protección solar, incluyendo un sombrero de ala ancha, bloqueador solar y ropa ligera y de colores claros.

Se recomienda usar repelente de insectos para prevenir picaduras de insectos.

Ropa adicional si asisten a la actividad en la piscina después del evento de voluntariado.
Comida/plato para compartir con otros en la comida compartida si están interesados.

Dónde reunirse: ¡Reúnanse en la parte trasera de La Escuela Primaria Overton aquí para comenzar con las presentaciones y nuestro proyecto del día!

Estacionamiento: Habrá estacionamiento disponible frente a la escuela y sus alrededores.

En caso de inclemencias climáticas peligrosas, como rayos, granizo o fuertes vientos o lluvias, el personal de APF indicará a los voluntarios que desalojen el sitio inmediatamente.
