Since 2002, when a research document identified Republic Square as the 1870s location for the Mexican community’s Diez y Seis celebrations, the Austin Parks and Recreation Department has scheduled a kick-off celebration at Republic Square to commemorate the historic ties of the park to Diez y Seis.
