AustinParksFoundationPark Advocacy, Blog Page

After November 2020 elections, we have two new Austin City Council Members! We reached out to Councilwoman Vanessa Fuentes of District 2 and Councilwoman Mackenzie Kelly of District 6 to ask them a few questions about themselves and Austin's parks. They were kind enough to respond, so be sure to check out their answers below. If you'd like to reach out to introduce yourself or ask your new Council Member a question, use the buttons below to find contact information!

What is your favorite park in Austin?

This is a tough question! Some of my favorite parks include Dove Springs District Park and Pastor Edward Clarence Craig Jr Park, formerly known as Franklin Park. Dove Springs Park has a wonderful nature themed playscape, great trails, and even a mini-zip line! I often recommend the blue wall near the pool as a great photo spot, too! Franklin Park has a ping-pong table, a wonderful walking trail, and very useful outdoor gym equipment. It’s also a great spot for an outdoor picnic!

Why are parks important to you, and/or why are parks important for a community?

Parks are such an important aspect of a complete, connected community. Some of my favorite memories growing up come from playing at the park, celebrating birthdays at the pavilion, and having fun with family and friends. It is my hope that every family and every Austinite can be within walking distance of a park and that everyone has the opportunity to come together.

What is a challenge that Austin parks face, and how would you like to address that problem?

Challenges facing our Austin parks center around adequate accessibility, i.e., parking, safe sidewalks, handicap accessible amenities, and overall maintenance including vegetation and lighting. I plan to work with Austin’s Parks and Recreation Department and Austin Parks Foundation to ensure that all parks are getting the services needed to serve as safe and accessible gathering places for all ages.

What is your favorite park in Austin?

My favorite park is Springwoods Park in Northwest Austin. I grew up in the neighborhood where the park is located and have fond memories of riding my bike there with my siblings. Back then, the park had wooden playscapes, and I recall many, many splinters growing up. Now that I’m raising my daughter in the same area, we frequent the park and I’m so happy for the updated equiptment .

Why are parks important to you, and/or why are parks important for a community?

Parks are important to me because they allow us to enjoy the beautiful outdoor spaces in Austin.
