As the usual warm Texas weather approaches us, it’s time to get outside and enjoy it! What better way to do so than flying kites? Founded in 1929, the ABC Kite Fest is one of Austin's favorite, family-friendly traditions. Austin Parks Foundation is thrilled that the kite fest is returning to Zilker Park on April 3, 2022 for the 93rd time.
Want to practice your kite-flying skills before the big day? We put together a list of parks and green spaces in Austin, TX with plenty of space to fly a kite. Here are 8 great parks for kite flying for you and your family to check out:
1. Northwest District Park
Previously a go-to location of our Movies in the Park series, Northwest District Park offers lots of green space to sit down, enjoy a cool drink or help your child fly their kite. Northwest District Park is a great place if you're looking for a large park North of Downtown Austin. Click here for directions!
2. Republic Square
Located in Downtown Austin, Republic Square allows you and your family to experience the beauty of the city from shady spots under the trees or basking in the sun. The open green space has no other surrounding trees, so it's great for flying kites. Click here for directions!
3. Adams-Hemphill Neighborhood Park
Adams-Hemphill Park near the University of Texas has been the venue for events such as HONK! TX and APF's Movies in the Park, making it an awesome location that has plenty of open space for flying kites. 4. Dick Nichols District Park
Located in Southwest Austin, Dick Nichols District Park is a go-to spot for neighbors looking for walking trails, sport courts, a swimming pool and more. With 152 acres of green space, there's plenty of room to set up your family's kite flying station for an afternoon of fun. Click here for directions!
5. Ramsey Neighborhood Park
Ramsey Park is a great option if you're looking for a smaller and more intimate space for you and your family in Central Austin. It's also child-friendly as it has playgrounds and other kids attractions. If you choose to use the playground equipment, please remember to social distance, wear a mask and sanitize those hands. 6. Bartholomew District Park
Bartholomew District Park is a 57-acre green space with disc golf, baseball fields, picnic areas and more in East Austin across the street from the Mueller H-E-B. If you'd like a great place to fly a kite and grab some lunch or dinner afterwards from nearby restaurants, this is a great option for you. Click here for directions!
7. Zilker Park
In a normal year, Zilker Park would be the home of the ABC Kite Festival. Austin’s favorite park provides 351-acres of open land for any type of outdoor activity. Needless to say, it is excellent for kite flying but will be very busy over the March 27-28 weekend.
Austin Parks Foundation recommends exploring a different option for this year's kite festival. Thankfully, there are hundreds of parks, trails and green spaces in Austin, and this is a perfect opportunity to explore somewhere new!
