The spring and summer seasons send Austinites scattering out across the city and into our beloved greenspaces. Whether to exercise, socialize, or reconnect with nature, our system of over 300 parks and trails have long been a place of refuge for people of all backgrounds and abilities. Another joy of the season is going to outdoor movie events in Austin.
New programs for the community
For over 10 years, APF has brought movies to neighborhood parks across Austin, ensuring Austinites of all backgrounds have access to free outdoor entertainment. And, after a 2 year hiatus, Movies in the Park is back with a full line up of family-friendly movies that will be shown at parks across the city beginning May 27 through November 18. For this year’s series, Austin Parks Foundation is partnering with Rocket Cinema.
Equitable access to green spaces means much more than having a nice park view or go-to gathering spot. In fact, studies have shown that more time spent in parks and green spaces is good for our mental health and helps people struggling with depression, anxiety and stress.
“It’s time for all Austinites to get back outside to enjoy their local park while enjoying a good movie. We want to welcome everyone back to Movies in the Park and all of our community events,” said Collin Wallis, Austin Parks Foundation CEO.
In addition to Movies in the Park, APF is hosting a revamped Fitness in the Park series and a newly developed series – Playdates in the Park. The new program is an inclusive, free community series designed to activate families with young children. Events will include activities such as live story time readings, creative movement, music and more.
Making the most of your movie night in the park
The series kicks off on May 27 at Northwest District Park. Residents and visitors can bring their blanket or lawn chairs for a fun and relaxing evening under the beautiful Austin night sky. Dogs are welcome and food trucks will be onsite. Alcoholic beverages, glass and styrofoam are not permitted in the park. We do provide recycling bins, but ask that you help us out by packing out all of your own trash. Smoking is also prohibited in the park, per city law. Visit the Movies in the Park website for movies, screening times, locations, rain dates and more.
