With the goal of creating a more equitable, safe, and connected active transportation network, ATX Walk Bike Roll (WBR) represents the City of Austin’s initiative to update three plans at once: the 2014 Urban Trails Master Plan, the 2016 Sidewalk Master Plan, and the 2014 Bicycle Plan.

As part of the project, the City is asking for your input on where and how Austin’s pedestrian and bike infrastructure can be revitalized. By dropping comments on the ATX WBR public input map, you can help to ensure that access to parks is a priority in this planning process.

Active transportation infrastructure like sidewalks, bike lanes, and trails not only provide an opportunity for healthy activity, but they are also critical in creating equitable access to parks. Many people walk, bike, or roll (via wheelchair, stroller, scooter, roller-skates, bicycle, skateboard, etc.) to their neighborhood park.

Safety and Access for Everyone

Active transportation is a valuable method of mobility and an important alternative to traveling via car. Not everyone can afford to have a car, and some are unable to drive. People with lower incomes, visual impairments, physical disabilities, along with the elderly and youth, depend on pedestrian infrastructure to access their daily needs, such as schools, grocery stores, and parks. Increasing places where people can safely walk, bike, and roll advances equity in accessibility and connectivity.

Everyone, including people who simply choose not to own a car, should be able to safely and easily access green spaces. And for those who do drive as a primary means of transportation, sidewalks, bike lanes, street crossings, and urban trails are still crucial to outdoor physical activity and recreation.

In addition, providing neighborhoods with better pedestrian infrastructure is one major way to reach the City’s goal of every resident being within a half mile or ten minute walk to a park, trail or green space. With your input, ATX Walk Bike Roll can help get us there!
